Washington Capitals Outdoor Classic
Sunday, December 12, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
Reston Skating Pavilion
1818 Discovery St, Reston, VA 20190

The Washington Capitals and the Reston Town Center skating pavilion will host the Mites on Ice Outdoor Classic on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Former Caps Peter Bondra and Alan May will be in attendance to skate with fans and sign autographs. The event will start out with a series of cross-ice hockey games featuring mini mite teams from around the area. This is the second outdoor event the Washington Capitals have taken part in this week as the buildup continues for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day in Pittsburgh.
Following the mini mite games Peter Bondra and Alan May will hold a brief skills demonstration where fans will be able to go on the ice and learn to shoot from the Caps alumni. After the skills demonstration the skating pavilion will provide a two-hour public skate at a discounted rate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bondra and May will be in attendance during the skate to interact with fans. Throughout the skate the Red Rockers and Slapshot will hand out giveaways and provide entertainment. The rink does have an open air cover so the event will take place rain or snow.
With the Capitals playing in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh less than a month from now this is another event for Caps fans to familiarize themselves with outdoor hockey. Last Sunday, Dec. 5, Capitals players Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Marcus Johansson along with Slapshot skated with nearly 200 fans at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink for Community Day. Bondra and former Cap Craig Laughlin instructed the audience about different hockey skills before the players took to the ice to skate with fans.
