January 2014

Ashburn House Select Squirt

Our player of the month is the Ashburn House Select Squirt Team. Players are members of the Youth House League. The strongest players from each league form our House Select teams at the Mite, Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam levels. There are currently have 80 players on the Ashburn Select teams. The House Select Squirt team recently won the Congressional Mid-Winter Classic Squirt B1 Championship. In an offensive battle, they defeated the team from Kettler 7-4. Congratulations to the entire team for bringing home a championship banner.

April 2013

Ashburn Xtreme U18 AA Team

The player of the month for April 2013 is the entire Ashburn Xtreme U18 AA team. The Xtreme won the USA Hockey Tier II 18 & Under National Championship on April 7th in Hartford Connecticut. The Xtreme defeated the Florida Jr. Panthers in a hard fought championship game 5-1.This marks the first National Championship in the Ashburn Xtreme Hockey Club's 11 year history and 16th trip to USA Hockey Nationals overall. Congratulations to the Head Coach, Steve Schneider, and the entire U18 AA team for bringing home the championship.

December 2012

Ben Zienty

The Caps Youth Hockey Player of the Month for December 2012 is Ben Zienty. Zienty is the starting goaltender for his Loudoun County high school team and also plays for the Ashburn Xtreme U18 club team. He is a junior at Loudoun County and currently holds a 4.1 GPA. Along with being a great student Zienty is also a great goaltender. He finished the busy month of December with 160 saves on 175 shots for a .914 save percentage, including a 70-save performance in a game against Stone Bridge that was featured as the Caps High School Game of the Week on Dec. 14. Zienty and his family moved to Leesburg, Va., from Wheaton, Ill., in July 2011, and he hopes to play Division I hockey in college and major in petroleum engineering.

November 2012

Austin Jarrelle

The Caps youth hockey player of the month for November 2012 is Austin Jarrelle. Austin earned this honor by overcoming adversity and coming back from a devastating season ending injury twice in the last two years. In 2010 Austin broke the tibia in his left leg and missed the second half of the season. After rehabbing for five months Austin made his way back to the ice and started to train. Then in April of 2012 while participating in off season conditioning Austin broke the tibia bone in his right leg and tore a ligament. After two surgeries and extensive physical therapy Austin finally made it back on the ice this season. In his first game back Austin recorded 3 goals and one assist helping lead his team to victory. Austin finished up the month of November with nine goals and five assists.

March 2012

Reston Raiders Squirt Select Team

Team: Reston Raiders Squirt Select Team

The player of the month for March is the complete roster of the Reston Raiders Squirt Select team who brought home another banner for their rink when they won the 2012 Liberty Cup Squirt B championship, held in Philadelphia, PA from March 9-11, 2012.

The Squirt Select team opened the tournament with a heartbreaking loss to the Johnstown Warriors by a score of 6-4. Never discouraged, they came roaring back with a 2-1 win over the Frederick Fury followed by a dominating win over the American Eagles (NJ) by a score of 15-4.

The stage was set for a well deserved rematch with the Johnstown Warriors in the tournament championship. The Raiders came out flying and took a 2-0 lead just minutes into the game. Johnstown fought back and tied the game at 4-4 early in the third. Outstanding team defense and goaltending held the surging Warriors at bay until a final offensive surge resulted in a Raiders goal with only 16 seconds remaining. The team and its great cheering section of parents counted down the remaining seconds and the players stormed the ice at the final horn to celebrate their hard fought 5-4 victory.

February 2012

Jake Mills

Position: Forward
Team: Atholton High School Raiders

The player of the month for February is Jake Mills of the Atholton High School Raiders. Jake is the assistant captain and helped lead the Raiders to their first ever Maryland state high school championship on February 27. Jake had four goals and eleven assists for the month including one goal and one assist in the championship game.

January 2012

PJ McNamara

Position: Goalie
Team: Georgetown Preparatory School

The Washington Capitals player of the month for January is PJ McNamara. PJ is the starting goaltender for the Georgetown Prep high school varsity hockey team and went a perfect 5-0 to start the New Year boasting an outstanding 0.6 GGA (goals against average). Over the course of those five games PJ faced 114 shots and stopped 111 of them for a save percentage of 97.3%. When asked about how his goalie played this past month Prep head coach Sean O’Leary stated “It is great that PJ received this honor. His best performance of the month was stopping 32 of 33 shots in our 4-1 win against Calvert Hall.” PJ is a senior and an Assistant Captain for the little Hoyas.

Kayla Watier

The player of the month for December is Kayla Watier. Kayla is a goaltender for the Ashburn Xtreme Pee Wee "A" team and is having a fantastic season. Her team is 9-2-0 on the season and has not shown signs of slowing down. Kayla participated in the Washington Capitals Youth Hockey Shootout at the beginning of the season and qualified for the finals of the Pee Wee Division. This was Kayla's second time in three years as a finalist in the competition. On December 20, 2011 Kayla pitched a shutout in front of over 18,000 Capitals fans at Verizon Center during the shootout finals. Her Ashburn teammate Ryan Ferencz scored one goal to help lead the pair to victory over the Maryland finalist. To see Kayla’s shootout profile and video of her performance click here.

November 2011

Montgomery Squirt AA Blue Devils

The player of the month for November is the entire Montgomery Squirt AA Blue Devils team who traveled to Chicago, Ill. to compete in the Bauer International Invite AAA Tournament. The tournament hosted an elite group of 20 Squirt Major hockey programs in the US and Canada.

The Blue Devils, who call Montgomery, Md. home, won all four of their games in the round-robin portion of the tournament, including victories over the Dallas Penguins and the Chicago Mission in which they recorded double-digit goal totals.

In the final round the Blue Devils, led by their coach Rob Keegan, took on the L.A. Jr. Kings for a battle of the unbeatens to determine the winner of this prestigious hockey tournament. After regulation couldn’t decide the victor, the Blue Devils won the game 6-5 in overtime and became the tournament champions
